Your camera roll is probably a mess of screenshots, duplicate selfies, and blurry photos. If you are reading this, you likely got a "Storage Full" warning and realized that photos are taking up 50GB of space.
Cleaning your library does not have to take weeks. Here is a practical, step-by-step routine to clean up your iPhone photos safely and fast.
Step 1: Start With the Big Files (Videos)
A 2-minute 4K video takes up more space than 150 photos. Before you start analyzing individual selfies, get rid of large videos.
- Open the Photos app.
- Go to Albums and scroll down to Videos.
- Tap Select and delete videos you no longer need, like old concert recordings or accidental pocket videos.
Step 2: Clear Out Old Screenshots
Screenshots pile up quickly. We take them to remember a recipe, an address, or a meme, and then we never look at them again.
- In the Albums tab, find the Screenshots folder under Media Types.
- Review the last few weeks manually.
- For screenshots older than 6 months, consider bulk deleting them. Tap Select, drag your finger across the grid, and hit delete.
Step 3: Merge Exact Duplicates
Since iOS 16, your iPhone automatically finds identical photos. This is the easiest space you will ever reclaim.
- Go to Albums and scroll to the very bottom.
- Tap Duplicates (under Utilities).
- Tap Select, then Select All, and tap Merge.
Your iPhone will keep the highest quality version and trash the rest.
Step 4: Tackle Similar Photos
This is where the real clutter lives. Similar photos are the 15 attempts you made to get a good group photo. Apple's built-in tool does not flag these because they are not exact duplicates.
You have two choices here:
- The slow way: Scroll through your Recents album manually, tapping each photo to view it, backing out, and selecting the bad ones to delete.
- The fast way: Use a dedicated tool like Swipe Photo Cleaner.
Swipe Photo Cleaner shows your photos in full screen. You swipe right to keep a photo and swipe left to trash it. It turns a boring chore into a fast, gamified process. You can clear thousands of photos in a 10-minute session.
Step 5: Empty the Trash
When you delete a photo on an iPhone, the storage is not freed immediately. The photo goes into the Recently Deleted folder for 30 days.
If you need storage space right now:
- Go to Albums > Recently Deleted.
- Authenticate with Face ID.
- Tap Select, then Delete All.
Make It a Monthly Routine
Don't wait until your phone is full. Set a reminder on the 1st of every month to do a 5-minute cleanup. Delete last month's screenshots, merge duplicates, and do a quick swipe session. A clean camera roll makes finding your favorite memories much easier.
